I didn't win NaNo this year. I ended up with just over 40,000 words, which is more than I had in October. There were some wonderful reasons for this, and some really shitty reasons, too.
On the up side, I met a wonderful woman and we spent a lot of time talking online and going out for food and drinks in November (no, we're not dating. No, we're not going to date).
On the really shitty side, Mandi Myers was killed just after Thanksgiving. I hadn't seen her in years, but we hung out a lot in high school. We both did cross country and track, band, and school projects together. We were part of a group that went to prom together. She did a tour in Iraq and had two little girls - the last time I saw her she only had one, who doesn't remember me at all. Then the father of her little girls murdered her. So, yeah, I took a day off from writing when I was already kinda far behind. I'm okay with that.
And on the last day of November, when I'd planned to write 10,000 words, I went to therapy and sobbed my eyes out. I had lunch with a friend from Germany. I had a job interview that went pretty well (follow-up interview is Wednesday). And in the evening, I introduce two good friends to each other over dinner and Cards Against Humanity. They're going on a real date later this week, and I think they're perfect together.
After everything that happened with Mandi, my friends are just more important than noveling. I've got a break from work in December - I can write tons then.
