This was a Kramer Books buy, and well worth it. Easy to read, suspenseful, funny - everything I wanted in a novel. Maupin captures San Francisco perfectly, and it's people. What start off as totally separate stoylines weave together and influence each other in the most delicious ways, just like the earlier books in the series. Next time I'm in DuPont, I might pick up the next installment - Babycakes. That one may prove less lighthearted, of course. Further Tales of the City takes place in 1982, in the very last months before the AIDS epidemic hit the City. Every sexual encounter the gay male characters have makes me twinge a little, knowing they're probably passing the virus along without having any idea. Babycakes picks up a bit later, and was one of the first novels to deal with the epidemic directly. All the same, I love Maupin's writing, so a little weepiness might be in store for me.
